The 8th prediction science seminar (2nd Prediction Science Laboratory and DA Team Joint Seminar) was held on May 11th, 2022 (Thu.) 17:30-18:15 (JST) and was delivered by Ms. Audrey Gonzalo. Audrey joined the Data Assimilation Research Team in the course of her French Master 1 degree at IMT-Atlantique, Brest, France, for 6 months under the RIKEN International Program Associates. This presentation provides a summary of the short-term IPA internship on the acceleration of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models with Machine Learning. In her study, she explored accelerating a high-resolution NWP model known as the SCALE model, by applying a machine-learning-based super-resolution method to map the low-resolution to the high-resolution SCALE outputs. Overall, her model shows a major improvement compared to the traditional bicubic interpolation.
