The 12th Prediction Science Seminar was held on November 1st, 2022 (Tuesday) 16:00-17:30 (JST) and was delivered by Dr. Jizhou Li. Dr. Jizhou Li is a postdoctoral researcher of RIKEN Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program. In this seminar, the talk was divided into three parts. In the first part, Dr. Jizhou Li explained the background of the Smale horseshoe as paradigms for chaos which consists of two main components that are "expansion" and "mixing" of phase-space volumes. Furthermore, a realization of horseshoes in a time-independent system was demonstrated. The Smale horseshoe map has the same topological structure as the homoclinic tangle. The second part focused on the development of a novel Smale horseshoe applied to multidimensional systems. Such an approach is an advancement to the original horseshoe which was proposed in two dimensions. The last part of the talk illustrated the homoclinic tangle captured on the Lagrangian Coherent Structures of a simplified kinematic model as well as several typhoon events. This also shows the realization of horseshoes in time-dependent systems.
