13:00-14:00 | The Brain: Not a Calculator, but a Predictor | Designated Prof. Shingo Shimoda (Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine / RIKEN CBS-TOYOTA Collaboration Center) |

Abstract
The human brain is often compared to a computer, yet such analogies fail to capture its true nature. Unlike a calculator that processes input to produce fixed outputs, the brain functions as a dynamic predictor, constantly constructing and refining models of the world to anticipate future events. This predictive mechanism underlies our perceptions, decisions, and actions, allowing us to navigate an uncertain and ever-changing environment.
In this lecture, I will explore the concept of the brain as a predictive organ, grounded in recent advances in neuroscience and cognitive science. We will discuss how predictive coding shapes sensory processing, motor control, and learning, and examine its implications for understanding human behavior, creativity, and adaptation. Additionally, I will address how this paradigm challenges traditional computational metaphors and offers new insights into artificial intelligence and clinical applications.
